Article on students' rights in the new "Youth Opinion" The new issue of the Youth Opinion of the European Youth Forum (YFJ) is out and available online. Four pages are completely devoted to students’ rights and present the Light on the rights campaing. With this issue YFJ also launches its new graphic identity with a new logo and website. Read the Youth Opinion: A New Energy for Europe! The article titled "Light on the students' rights"/ "Lumiere sur le droits des etudiants" features quotes by secondary school students, representatives of national school students' unions, members of OBESSU as well as extracts from the Declaration of School Students Rights and Students Rights Charter. Final conference of the "Light on the rights" project in Serbia - Prava na sunce! UNSS (Union of secondary school students of Serbia) held the final conference of the project "Prava na sunce" (Serbian for "Light on the rights") at the end of March 2010. The project for the implementation of the campaign was conducted from August 2009 - March 2010 by UNSS with the support of Ministry of youth and sports. In the framework of this project the campaign "Prava na sunce" was promoted in around 100 schools all over the country. School students promoted students' rights and the campaign by organising various activities - school promotions, public debates, theater plays..all with the "Light on the rights" identity and UNSS & OBESSU logo. However, the main focus of the campaign in Serbia was the promotion of the new Law on education which gives the right to the students to be partners in the decision making processes in schools by voting in the school board. This is why the main slogan in the framework of the "Light on the rights" was "Vote in the school board - it's your right!" At the final conference the students gathered to exchange experiences in the implementation of the campaign and to discuss how to continue with the campaign after the official project is over. The next step will be the monitoring of the implementation of the new Law, using the "Light on the rights" campaign to make sure that the Law is properly implemented and that the students' rights are respected in all schools. In the picture: The State Secretary of Youth of Serbia discussing the importance of active youth participation with the students The first meeting of the work group on school students’ rights in the year 2010 has been held near Stockholm, Sweden on the last weekend of February. The working group's main task is to co-ordinate the campaign "Light on the Rights" of OBESSU. Therefore the members of the group try to stay in contact with OBESSU's’member organisations collecting information about national initiatives in the framework of Light on the Rights and the situation of school students’ rights in general. Some time ago a questionnaire on school students’ rights has been sent out to all member organisations of OBESSU. We now got back enough answers to do some statistics allowing us to get an overview on the situation of school students’ rights in Europe. The outcomes will soon be published on this website. The focus shall lie on the introduction of best practices from different countries. To promote school students’ rights on a European level the working group is in contact with the European Youth Forum (YFJ). In September 2009 YFJ adopted a celebratory declaration on youth rights calling for a Convention on youth rights of the council of Europe. The members of the working group are working closely with the YFJ on incorporating students’ rights into all youth rights related processes. OBESSUs’ focus lies on high quality education and the participation of school students. Another very important task was to update the lightontherights.eu!
